HEMEL STAGS 12 WORKINGTON TOWN 60

H/T 6 - 34

The Stags were on the wrong end of a 11 try performance by their Cumbrian visitors and were undone in the centre of the park by a Man of the Match performance from Centre Elliott Miller who crossed for a hat trick of tries. Forward Caine Barnes bagged a brace for himself and Carl Forber was in good form with the boot kicking 8 of the conversions .

With ball in hand the Stags looked useful but the Town defence proved difficult to breach and Hemel did well to cross for two converted scores.five minutes in and Workington got the scoreboard moving when Barnes got through 4 defenders to go over between the posts. The Stags defence failed to gather a high bomb and another converted try resulted but it would be wrong to say that it was all one way traffic. Marcus Elliott was quick to charge down a Town pass but he was caught on route to the line and then the Stags thought they had scored in the left corner but the linesman ruled that there was a foot in touch.

Workington were in the ascendency but the Stags

got the home fans cheering on 25 minutes, Kieran Moran going over left of the posts, somehow getting through a number of Workington bodies for the four points. Kieran Smith making the conversion. Louis Sheriff was the architect of more Hemel attacks before the half time hooter but the half ended with the score at 34-6 to the visitors. The second stanza was pretty much a repeat of the first, Hemel were disciplined in their defence but some loose one on one tackles were the weak point of their game. As has been the case all season,

The Stags showed real character and never gave up. A big improvement from recent games is that the team gave away only 4 penalties over the eighty minutes and made very few unforced errors a real positive for the futureAs already noted, Hemel never gave up and were in fact the last to score, a good spell of pressure ending with Lewis Taylor stretching his arm out to dot the ball down. Ricky  Hough made no mistake with the kick.

The Stags travel to Oldham on Sunday to play the game cancelled earlier in the season due to snow.
