HEMEL STAGS 32 OXFORD RL 26

HT 12 - 16

The Stags emerged victorious from their game against Oxford RL but had to come from behind to secure the much needed win.

It was Hemel who started on the front foot, getting the scoreboard moving after just 3 minutes. A penalty award gave them the field position to earn a repeat set then a good passing move ended with debutant Jack Wray, on loan from Hull feeding James Thornton to finish the move. Mitch Vincent kicked the conversion to begin what was to be a perfect day with the boot for the young  Doncaster lad.

Oxford lost the services of prop Lee Land for ten minutes when he landed a high shot on a Hemel player and the hosts took full advantage of the situation by increasing their lead on 23 minutes, a neat Corey Hanson pass to Daniel Hawksworth resulting in a try. Vincent converting. Hanson had recently come off the bench as a replacement for Reece Williams who suffered an injury wich ended his match. Connor Bower was another who had to withdraw through injury and the home bench was beginning to look a little sparse!

Hemel now seemed to return to their old habits as Oxford woke up and got themselves back into the game with 3 tries in 6 minutes, Dent managing to squeeze in on the far left wing. The difficult conversion was successfully kicked by Harvey Burnett. Jordan Gill sv ored next with a well taken try on te right wing, Burnett missing this kick. The third try was credited to Fleming, the kick from Burnett gave Oxford a 16 - 12 lead at half time.

Oxford started the second half as they had finished the first, in the ascendancy. Hemel gave away the penalty that resulted in Kitson crossing for an unconverted try. When burly forward Stuart Biscomb used his weight to good effedt to crash over and Burnett converted the Stags trailed by 14 points and many of the home fans thought the chances of a Stags win was gone. The players thought differently and the come-back began on 62 minutes, quick thinking by man of the match Vincent brought about a kick through the Oxford line which he ran on to and caught to canter over the chalk untouched. Having made and scored the try Vincent finished off by adding the extras.

With 15 minutes left on the clock Reece Williams just managed to find the line under a bevy of oppposition players and when Jack O'Brien breached the Oxford defensive line to canter over, both tries converted by Vincent, it put Hemel into a 4 point lead and a win looked on the cards.

The final score of the day was a penalty kicked by Vincent and although, as the clock ticked down, Oxford tried everything they could to cancel out the Hemel lead it was a the Stags who were celebrating when the final hooter sounded.
